Mill Creek at Highland Hills

Location: Cuyahoga County, Ohio. View location map
Construction: Spring 1999

Overview of the Problem

Mill Creek at this location was entrenched and eroding laterally (widening), undercutting a steep hillside and destabilizing the slope and rear yards of 3 homes. The project was initiated to create a stable stream configuration and to stabilize the slope. Causes of the problem were associated with prior channel modification and entrenchment associated with increased stormwater.

Restoration Solution

The project relocated the channel away from the toe of the slope and established a new meandering channel with increased access to active floodplain. Bioengineering practices were used to stabilize the hillside, while root wads and rock were used where outside bends meet the toe of the slope or higher terrace areas.
