Grant Run

Location: Franklin County, Ohio. View location map
Construction: Spring 1999

Overview of the Problem

Historically, Grant Run had been modified for agricultural drainage purposes. In recent years its watershed had been developed for residential housing. The stream had been straightened and the floodplain filled resulting in an entrenched G type stream channel. Channel instability caused debris dams, loss of trees and a rapidly eroding channel that threatened the adjacent residential properties.

Restoration Solution

A Priority 3 restoration was determined the most cost effective given the limited amount of land available to return the channel to a historic stable form. A more stable Bc channel morphology was constructed, reconnecting Grant Run to its floodplain through a combination of floodplain excavation and raising and stabilizing the channel bed. Erosive forces were reduced by changing the cross-sectional dimension and hydraulic radius, increasing the radius of curvature and stabilizing outside bends with root wads and bioengineering techniques. The riparian area was enhanced with more than 500 large tree plantings and branch layering.
