East Fork of the Mill Creek

Location: Hamilton and Butler Counties, Ohio. View location map
Construction: Summer 2000

Overview of the Problem

The Mill Creek here is a highly modified low gradient alluvial floodplain stream. The East Fork has been deepened and straightened in the past for agricultural drainage and is now highly developed along its former floodplain. Because it has been so modified it is dominated by glides and lacks good development of other physical habitat features.

Restoration Solution

The project installed in-stream structures in order to would improve aquatic habitat and encourage positive biological response. Newbury riffles were installed on predicted riffle spacing. The effect of installing riffles increased local gradient and reduces the effect of the entrenchment by creating more of a B type stream. This has increased oxygenation and encouraged pool development downstream of the riffles. J weirs were included in the design in order to protect the banks at points along the reach that are susceptible to erosion.
