Restoration | Natural Channel Design | Tools & Models

Brandywine Creek

Location: Hamilton County, Ohio. View location map
Construction: Spring 1999

Overview of the Problem

This site had the classic problems of urban streams. It had been historically straightened lowered and moved to one side of its valley creating a condition prone to down cutting which it did as the flow regime changed with urbanization. It was highly entrenched with lateral instability causing the initial concern.

Restoration Solution

The project demonstrated two approaches to restoration of entrenched channels. For one segment a new channel was constructed in the existing terrace such that the terrace was converted back to the active floodplain. The entrenched channel was blocked with plugs and partially filled, converting it to a series of riparian pools and wetlands. The new channel in another segment remained approximately at the elevation of the entrenched channel and the terrace was graded down to form the active floodplain.
