Tributary to Bear Run

Location: Lawrence County, Ohio. View topographic map
Construction: Autumn 1999

Overview of the Problem

This is a small, fairly high gradient stream in a historically logged and mined area. The stream had been aggrading (building upward) and was braided in places due to deposition. Consequently the stream was higher than the surrounding land and causing flooding of an adjacent home and road.

Restoration Solution

The project recreated a floodplain and a new channel configuration, which would balance the movement and deposition of the dominant particle size in the bed load. Utilizing upstream reference reaches and published stream relationships, the designed stream contains portions of steep step pool (Rosgen A) and sinuous riffle-pool (Rosgen E) configurations.
